Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
A pressurized, pure-oxygen therapy that speeds healing from wounds, infections, and complex injuries —offered in person at our West Palm Beach location, and shared here as part of Vitailix's commitment to being the trusted resource on canine biohacking and holistic dog health.
What It Is
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) places your dog in a sealed, pressurized chamber where they breathe 100% pure oxygen — at two to three times normal air pressure. That extra pressure lets far more oxygen dissolve into the blood than normal breathing allows, and that oxygen-rich blood travels straight to injured or healing tissue.
A few things happen as a result:
- Cells get more fuel to heal - extra oxygen gives damaged tissue the energy it needs to repair and rebuild, especially in areas with naturally low blood flow, like after surgery or trauma.
- Swelling goes down - the added pressure helps shrink inflammation, easing discomfort and improving movement.
- Infection control improves - pure oxygen is hostile to many types of bacteria, and it can make antibiotics work more effectively.
- New blood vessels form - over time, this builds a stronger, longer-term blood supply to the treated area, supporting more complete healing.
It's non-invasive and drug-free — most dogs relax or sleep through the session.
What It Helps With
- Wounds & post-surgical recovery — speeds healing and can reduce the need for further surgery or antibiotics
- Traumatic injuries — deep cuts, broken bones, and bruising heal faster with improved blood supply to damaged tissue
- Chronic, stubborn wounds — including pressure sores and slow-healing sores in senior or immune- compromised dogs
- Infections — including complications from bites, tissue damage, or poor circulation
- Arthritis & chronic pain — reduced inflammation can ease discomfort and improve mobility
- Cases where standard treatment has stalled — HBOT is often used when normal healing has plateaued or other methods haven't fully worked
What to Expect
COMING SOON! In West Palm Beach: Vitailix offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy in person, performed by our trained team as part of your dog's care plan.
Not local?
This guide reflects the same standard of care we hold our own sessions to, so you know what to look for and expect wherever you go.
Before the session: your dog should be screened for lung or heart issues and uncontrolled seizures, since these can rule out HBOT as a safe option. Chambers are sized for your dog, from small breeds to larger
dogs, and are built with comfort in mind — often including soft bedding, calming music, and windows so pets feel at ease.
During the session: your dog rests inside the sealed chamber while breathing pure oxygen under increased pressure. Sessions typically run 45 to 90 minutes. Most dogs relax or sleep through treatment. Pressure
changes can occasionally cause mild ear discomfort, similar to what people feel on an airplane — the team helps manage this so it stays comfortable.
After the session: no downtime is needed. Side effects are uncommon and usually mild when the treatment is properly supervised.
How many sessions: this depends heavily on the condition being treated. Mild injuries may need just 5 to 10 sessions. Severe wounds or chronic conditions can call for 20 or more. Some dogs with recurring issues benefit from occasional maintenance sessions every few months. HBOT is often paired with other therapies — like laser, acupuncture, or massage — for better, faster results.
Breed-Specific Notes
- Senior dogs of any breed - often benefit the most from HBOT, as chronic wounds and slow healing become more common with age
- Large & giant breeds (Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Great Dane) - higher rates of hip dysplasia and post-surgical joint procedures; HBOT is sometimes used to support recovery after orthopedic surgery
