History of the Portuguese Water Dog
The Portuguese Water Dog originated in Portugal’s Algarve region, where they worked alongside fishermen as early as the Middle Ages. Known as “Cão de Água,” they herded fish into nets, retrieved gear, and guarded boats, their curly, water-repellent coats ideal for ocean work. Their athleticism and intelligence made them indispensable on fishing vessels.
Nearly extinct by the 1930s due to modern fishing methods, the breed was revived through dedicated breeding efforts in the 20th century. Introduced to the U.S. in the 1960s, they gained fame as First Dogs for President Obama’s family. Recognized by the AKC in 1983, they ranked in the top 50 breeds in 2023. Today, they’re loved for their water-loving energy and versatility in sports and family life.
